Pelham Lots Fight Clay, Shade, and Slope

Pelham sits along the edge of Oak Mountain, and many lots here are wooded and sloped. The soil under most yards is dense red clay. Clay sheds water instead of soaking it in, so a hard rain runs across the surface, cuts channels through bare spots, and carries mulch and topsoil to the bottom of the yard or against the house. Shade from the trees keeps grass thin, which leaves even more soil exposed.

That is why most of the yard work we quote in Pelham starts with water, not plants. Regrading low spots, extending downspouts, adding drains or rock channels where runoff concentrates, and building up beds so they drain are what make new plantings last. Planting into compacted clay without fixing the drainage usually means paying twice.

The housing is mostly from the 1970s through the 2000s, so patios, walkways, decks, and exterior paint are aging on the same schedule. Many subdivisions have HOAs with rules on exterior changes. Permitted work inside city limits goes through the City of Pelham.

Do you cover all of Pelham, including Ballantrae and the Oak Mountain side?

Yes. Ballantrae, Chandalar, the streets near Oak Mountain State Park, and the neighborhoods along US-31, Highway 52, and Highway 261 are all covered by our local Birmingham crew, as are nearby Helena and Alabaster. Call 205-281-0940 to set up a free estimate.

Nothing grows in our back yard and it washes out every storm. Can you fix that?

Usually, but the fix starts with where the water goes. We look at the slope, the downspouts, and where runoff enters your yard, then propose grading, drains, or rock channels to slow and redirect it. Once the water is under control, we rebuild beds and choose plants that can handle shade and clay. We put the drainage and the planting in the written scope as separate lines so you can see what each part costs.

Our Chandalar house is from the 1970s. Where should we start?

Start with anything that lets water in: gutters, exterior trim, caulk at windows and doors, and grading against the foundation. Then look at items near the end of their life, such as decks and exterior stairs. Cosmetic updates come last. We walk the house with you and give you a written list in that order.

Do you work under HOA rules in Ballantrae and other Pelham subdivisions?

Yes. We provide written scopes with materials, colors, and dimensions for your HOA application, and we wait for approval before starting any exterior work that requires it.

Do you pull permits in Pelham?

Yes, when the work requires one. Permitted work inside city limits goes through the City of Pelham. Landscaping and most repairs do not need a permit; new structures, structural repairs, and some drainage work may. We confirm before quoting.
