In Mountain Brook, the Hard Part Is Making Repairs Invisible

The older parts of Mountain Brook were laid out in the 1920s and 1930s, and many of those houses still have plaster walls and ceilings, original trim profiles, and paneled doors. Plaster moves with the seasons and with the house, so hairline and diagonal cracks over doors and windows are common. Fixing them properly means securing loose plaster, filling and taping the crack, and feathering the repair until it blends with the wall around it. Drywall patched into plaster with a visible edge is the result most owners are trying to avoid.

Mature hardwoods are part of the appeal here, and they shape the maintenance. Leaves fill gutters, overflowing gutters soak fascia and trim, and roots lift walkways and steps. Many lots are steep and wooded, which keeps exterior wood damp and shaded. Exterior paint and trim repairs tend to come up on the north and downhill sides of the house first.

Because many homes here have already had one or two renovations, we often work next to finishes from different decades. Matching a trim profile, a paint sheen, or a wall texture takes more time than a new-construction job, and we price it that way. Permitted work goes through the City of Mountain Brook.

Do you work in every part of Mountain Brook?

Yes. Crestline Village, English Village, Mountain Brook Village, Overton, Cherokee Bend, Brookwood Forest, and the streets between them are all covered by our local Birmingham crew. Call 205-281-0940 to set up a free estimate.

Our house has original plaster. Will you tear it out?

Not unless it has truly failed. Most cracked plaster can be repaired: we re-secure loose areas, fill and tape the cracks, and blend the patch into the surrounding wall. Where a section is beyond repair, we can replace that area and work to blend the transition. We will show you which walls are repairs and which are replacements before we price anything.

Can you match the old trim and paneled doors in our house?

In most cases. Many common trim profiles are still made, and others can be built up from stock pieces or matched by a millwork shop. Old doors can usually be refit to swollen or settled openings. When an exact match is not practical, we tell you that before work starts and show you the closest option.

We have big trees all around the house. What problems do they cause?

The usual ones are clogged gutters that overflow onto fascia and trim, shaded siding that stays damp and grows mildew, and roots lifting walkways and steps. We repair the damage and look at the cause, such as gutter size, downspout routing, and grading, so the same boards do not rot again. Tree removal and arborist work are not part of our services.

How do permits work in Mountain Brook?

Work that requires a permit is permitted through the City of Mountain Brook. Interior painting and plaster repair usually do not need one; structural changes, additions, and significant electrical or plumbing work do. We confirm what your scope needs before we schedule.
