For residential driveways in the Birmingham Metro area we recommend waiting at least 7 days before light passenger-vehicle traffic, and a full 28 days before parking heavy trucks or SUVs on a new pour. Alabama summers accelerate surface drying but not deep curing — rushing traffic on a fresh slab before the internal hydration is complete is the most common cause of early surface scaling and cracking we see on competitor jobs.
Repair makes sense for isolated cracks under 1/4" wide, minor surface spalling, or single settled panels where the base is still solid. Replacement is usually the better value when you have widespread cracking, heaving caused by tree roots or unstable fill, or slabs that have dropped more than an inch. We'll tell you honestly which path is right for your situation — we'd rather give you the repair option when it holds than upsell a full replacement. Call 205-281-0940 to schedule a walk-through assessment.
Jefferson County and much of the Birmingham Metro sit on expansive red clay that swells significantly when wet and shrinks in drought — both cycles stress a slab from below. Proper site prep is the critical variable: we excavate to stable subgrade, compact a graded-aggregate base layer, and cut control joints at intervals matched to the slab dimensions. Skipping or shortcutting the base is why many slabs in Hoover and Vestavia Hills neighborhoods crack within a few years of installation. Alabama doesn't have a hard-freeze frost-heave problem like northern states, but the clay movement alone is enough to destroy a poorly prepared pour.
Stamped concrete uses textured mats pressed into the wet surface to mimic brick, flagstone, slate, or wood grain patterns, then color hardener or integral pigment is added. It typically costs 30–50% more than plain broom-finished concrete. Whether it's worth it depends on the use: for a patio visible from the home's main living area or a front-entry walkway it can meaningfully improve curb appeal and perceived value. For a purely functional back-service driveway or utility pad, broom finish is the right call. We can show you samples from past Birmingham Metro projects so you can compare before deciding.
Permit requirements vary by jurisdiction. In Birmingham and most Jefferson County municipalities a new driveway apron connecting to a public street requires a right-of-way permit at minimum; larger flatwork or any work affecting drainage may require a zoning or building permit. We pull all required permits as part of our process — unpermitted flatwork can trigger re-inspection demands during a home sale and may void homeowner's insurance coverage for related damage. Our licenses are verifiable on the Alabama HBLB (Home Builder #24914) and General Contractor roster (#S-58482). If you're in Hoover, Vestavia Hills, or another municipality with its own permitting office, we know the local process.
We back all concrete installations with a 1-year workmanship warranty plus manufacturer warranties on any bagged or proprietary repair materials used. The workmanship warranty covers defects caused by placement, finishing, or curing errors on our part. It does not cover damage from tree-root intrusion, ground settlement caused by utility excavation after the pour, or surface wear from de-icing salts — we'll tell you upfront if site conditions make warranty fulfillment ambiguous.
